FESTIVALS, COMMUNITY EVENTS, PARTIES - SPRING/SUMMER 2017

BIG CANNOLI GRAND OPENING
Huge hugs and many congrats to the The Big Cannoli on the opening of their second location in Market Lane, Woodbridge. Over the last couple of years I've really gotten to know owners, Val Cappelli and Dina Cosentino and am honoured to call them friends. Val, a.k.a. "Johnny Fever", and "La Dina" (WKRP tv show and northern Italian thing ..heheee) are incredibly generous people who are always ready to assist individuals, groups and charitable organizations within our city. Everyone knows they are the REAL DEAL and I wish them much success on this latest endeavour!

FALLEN WORKERS MEMORIAL

REMEMBERING OUR FALLEN ðŸ”¨A privilege to attend the 2nd Annual Fallen Workers Memorial (IFWM) and honour those of Italian origin who perished in work-related incidents from 1900 to the present. Located at the Columbus Centre in Toronto and presented by the IFWM Committee the memorial consists of 11 columns displaying the names of over 1500 fallen. The number increases almost weekly and since there is no longer any space available on the memorial IFWM will now be including an-onsite electronic database. Many of those early migrants died in gruesome working conditions and their bodies never buried...something completely surreal for someone of my generation. Albeit a bittersweet day, it was a pleasure covering this for Panoram Italia Magazine and meeting our newly-appointed Italian Ambassador to Canada, Claudio Taffuri..Benvenuto!

JOHNNY LOMBARDI PUBLIC SCHOOL OPENING

Honouring a great Canadian! ðŸ‡µðŸ‡ªðŸ‘ðŸ‘ A pleasure to attend the recent official opening of Johnny Lombardi Public School...what a beautiful way to celebrate an individual who helped create the dynamic social landscape of Canada! The late Johnny Lombardi was a broadcasting pioneer who launched a radio station 50 years ago that would eventually deliver programming in 30 plus languages. A true visionary and trailblazer, he also gave voice and a platform to new Canadians. He was an advocate for racial diversity and tolerance, encouraging inclusivity and most importantly, the preservation of heritage and multiculturalism (Btw, North American studies show there is less crime in multi-ethnic communities). Therefore, it's no wonder Johnny was awarded the Order of Canada in 1981 for his contributions to society. Thank you to Trustee Linda A. Aversa for the invitation and great to see Trustee Anna DeBartolo (and her mamma!) after so long!!! And of course congratulations to JLPS Principal Angellotti, Superintendent of Schools Paul Valle and the entire Lombardi family who were fortunate to have Johnny as 'Papa'' and 'Nonno'

VAUGHAN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
IT'S A WRAP !! ðŸŽ¬ðŸ“½️🎥 Tony and I literally got off a plane, making it just in time for the annual Vaughan International Film Festival (VFF) Awards Show. Congratulations to Canadian actor, Enrico Colantoni who received the VFF Independent Leadership Award and a special thank you to my longtime friend and VFF sponsor Melissa Rose (Soundscape) for the special invitation!! Love you, Mel! XOXO

ICCO BUSINESS EXCELLENCE AWARDS
Incredible eve at the Liberty Grand Entertainment Complex where ICCO honoured the best of the Italian Canadian business community. Celebrating Canada's 150th and contributions made by Italians, I am sure I'm not the only who thinks Hon. Supreme Court Justice, Frank Iacobucci gave one of the most profound speeches regarding the history of Italian Canadians - migration and social and economic importance this community has played in the fabric of Canadian society. Congrats to the recipients of the ICCO Business Excellence Awards;Vivian Risi, Nicola Capomasi, Lenny Lombardi, Luigi Ferrara, Cristiano De Forentiis, Maurizio Magnifico and Daniele Zanotti. Special congrats to my friend Mike Soragnese of Render Media who is also the founder and executive director of Critique Week - a newly-launched non-profit organization which provides youth professional guidance and tools relative to the media arts. Bravo!!! A special thank you to Mario Cutone and Scotiabank for inviting me as well as Valeria Mitsubata Photography for providing many of these photos. MAX EISEN BOOK SIGNING

THE STRONGEST HUMAN I KNOW  Congrats to Max Eisen whose North-American publication, By Chance Alone, is now in its second edition with distribution across Europe. I first met Max when I interviewed him for a Holocaust piece I wrote for Fredi Magazine. He asked if I wanted to know EVERYTHING and of course I said I could "handle it." I was wrong. He told me things that to this day I've never heard him utter on a podium... because they are horrific. Arrested in Hungary with his entire family, Max entered Auschwitz at age 15 and dealt with atrocities I won't mention. His family, consisting of his parents, two brothers and a sister, were all gassed and out of 67 extended family members only he and two cousins survived. Having spent the first month with his father and uncle in the camp (later taken away for medical experiments and never seen again), Max told me the strength they gave him is the main reason he is alive today. As they were taken away his father said, ""You must LIVE...and you must tell everyone what is happening." Last words from father to son. With the average lifespan being 3 months for any Jewish prisoner, he survived and a year later was liberated by an American army platoon. Max called me to attend his latest public speaking engagement this past Sunday and there was no way I was going to miss it. Knowing Max has been a gift and I thank Mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua's office for making my interview 4 years ago possible. He is one of my heroes, the greatest of teachers and I feel so incredibly blessed to call him 'friend.' His autobiography, which already has been nominated for an award and is receiving an recognition here and abroad, is being implemented in high school curriculums across the GTA. BY CHANCE ALONE can be found at Chapters Indigo ðŸ“š

MISSISSAUGA ITALFEST
CELEBRATING ITALIANITA' MISSISSAUGA-STYLE! ðŸ‡®ðŸ‡¹ðŸ‡¨ðŸ‡¦️ Congrats to Patti Jannetta-Baker, Tina Cole and all organizers of Mississauga Italfest "Ferragosto in the CIty" on another exciting event showcasing a culture admired the world over. Amazing to see flagthrowers in action and to capture it all for Panoram Italia Magazine. Special thx to emcee, Sandra Carusi a.k.a. 'The Cruuuuuzer' for hilarious shout-out!

'SUMMER IS ENDING' PICNIC
ON THE SADDLE! ðŸš´ðŸŒž Special thanks to inspirational friend, Frank Mazzuca of Veneto Cycling Club (far right with food...of course!) for reminding me of the fourth annual "Summer Is Ending' picnic. Held at Pinecrest Farms and a collaboration between the York Region Cycling Coalition and Community Cycling Clubs this fun event celebrates the end of the cycling season. I'm obviously not dressed for the occasion. Nor did I ride as I had a date with a different kind of saddle hehee...🐎🤠 I did cycle close to 60k day before so I hope I'm forgiven, Frank

ITALIAN HERITAGE MONTH AT VENETO CENTRE
Italian Heritage Month has come and gone and this celebration held at Vaughan's Veneto Centre was just one of the many to take place around the GTA. Great times! ðŸ‡®ðŸ‡¹ðŸ‡®ðŸ‡¹ðŸ‡®ðŸ‡¹ #ItalianHeritageMonth

There’s nothing more rewarding than a child’s happiness.

Freedom Day @Yonge-Dundas Square

Freedom Day @Yonge-Dundas Square
How lucky can a girl get? Not only did I get to spend an afternoon with my hero, Max Eisen during Freedom Day in Toronto, I also met another hero, Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield! Held annually at Yonge-Dundas Square, Freedom Day celebrates our human rights and spreads awareness regarding racial discrimination and intolerance. Max, a Holocaust survivor that I had the honour of interviewing invited me to this eye-opening event. Chris even played the tune he sang with the Barenaked Ladies while out in the cosmos! Great day for the kids and I encourage all parents to bring their children to next year's event. Spread the word of peace….Photo – Commander Chris Hadfield

"Light the Night" Gala @Le Parc Vaughan

"Light the Night" Gala @Le Parc Vaughan
I did it!!!! My entire adult life I’ve had a fear of public speaking. I avoided it at all costs and missed so many great opportunities because of it. Well, no more. I emceed the “Light the Night Gala” in Vaughan (proceeds benefitting the Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life and Sunnybrook Hospital) and I have to say that I loved EVERY minute of it…I didn’t want to get off that podium!!! For those of you who live in fear of trying something new, be brave. Believe me when I tell you it’s only an illusion. If I can do something that terrified me as much as this did, so can you. Props to Joseph Montagnese of the Vaughan Citizen for this photo.
